Cadavers can “endure” in ways that living bodies cannot. Once you take away the notion of self from the cadaver and the emotional associations of death, dead bodies have the potential to be beautiful. They are used in art, science, and medicine, opened up, explored, dissected and disassembled. They are objects of beauty and fascination, and this fascination deepens when body parts are removed from their original context. Out of context the parts of the body can be grotesque, their placement away from the person, disconcerting, unnerving, but still they can be beautiful.
